What’s Your Body Type?

The holidays are fast approaching!  That means many of us (me included) will eat more than we should and be proud of it!   January  1st comes and it’s time to get back on track with New Years Resolutions. Getting in shape is one of the more popular resolutions.

We’ve seen it happen time and time again:  People will start the year off working out harder than they’ve ever done in their life, only to give up by the end of February.  One reason people give up is because they don’t see the results they want.  They look at the magazines and see the “perfect” body and want to get it themselves.

Nothing wrong with that goal, but is it realistic?  There are many factors that dictate how a person’s body will look:  age, gender, diet, exercise, stress levels, sleep (or lack thereof,) and so on.  These are all very important factors when it comes to your body, however there’s one that’s often overlooked:  body type.
.
The Importance of Body Type
.
A person’s body type is oftentimes based on genetics, something many of us have to accept.  For men, there are 3 basic body types:  the ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph.
.
.
The ectomorph is the man with a slim build, who can eat whatever he wants yet rarely gains a pound.  They are usually lanky with narrow shoulders.
.
The endomorph is the polar opposite of the ectomorph.  He tends to be overweight, has a slower metabolism, and gains weight easily.
.
The mesomorph is in the middle.  he has broad shoulders, a slim waist, muscular and athletic.
.
Not all men fit in 1 category.  There are some who are a mixture of body types.
.
Generally speaking women have different body types as well:
.
The banana (rectangular) shaped woman is slim, gaining weight primarily in the tummy,  butt, chest and face.

.

An apple (downward triangle)  shaped woman tends to have slim thighs, broader shoulders and narrower hips.  She tends to gain weight in the stomach, chest and face.

.

Pear shaped women have a hip measurement greater than their bust measurement.  Women with this body type are usually bottom heavy.

.

Hourglass shaped women tend to have a narrow waist with their hips and bust of nearly equal size.  This body type tends to gain weight evenly over the body, while the waist is the last place to see weight gain.

.

Here’s more info on body types:

This information is very important when choosing the right exercise program, because what works for 1 person’s body type may not work for another.  Or, the results may be drastically different for each person.

.

The key is to know what your body type is (as well as other factors as mentioned above.)  It is also important to keep things in perspective.  Is it realistic for a banana shaped woman to attain the perfect hour glass figure without plastic surgery?  Should an endomorph be upset if he doesn’t become an ectomorph?
.
If an endomorph and ectomorph perform the exact same exercises (as in a fitness class), will they obtain the same results?
.
This is why it’s important to take “before” and “after” fitness pics with a grain of salt. Just because THEY obtained certain results does NOT mean  you will too.
.
Your body type will play a larger role than you might anticipate.
.
The key for individuals is to know their limitations and be realistic with their goals.  Not everyone can have what society considers the “perfect” body, but that can’t stop you from becoming the best person you can be!  Find out what your body type is and use the exercises that work best for you.  Your body will thank you for it!
